Solo for Boy by Sasha Amaya

SOLO FOR BOY: Exploring Eurocentric Masculine Beauty – Sasha Amaya presents new work at DOCK 11 on January 11, 2024. The premiere of Solo for Boy delves into the essence of Eurocentric masculine beauty, drawing inspiration from a captivating blend of fashion and art history spanning the last two centuries.

This thought-provoking piece challenges the enduring dominance of the white, able-bodied male form and the societal constructs associated with it. Through a dark, physical, and playful exploration, Sasha Amaya invites audiences to contemplate the attention and permissions granted to this particular embodiment of beauty, sparking introspection on power, vulnerability, and desire.

This captivating inquiry is part of a trilogy of works, including Sarabande (2020) and the upcoming Orfeo, which collectively seek to interrogate and reimagine the prevailing narratives in art history. Amaya initiates a collective exploration of the performance space by prompting audiences to engage with the performer and question their ingrained perspectives. Following the production, audience members are encouraged to share their insights, memories, and inquiries, contributing to a collaborative cartography of the individual production experiences. This shared platform fosters meaningful conversations around the themes explored, from the portrayal of white masculinity to the under-representation of the male body and the female gaze in performance art.
