Tokyo’s avant-garde synth duo, CRYSTAL—who have famously partnered with talents like Ikonika, Thundercat, Matias Aguayo, and more—proudly unveil their third album, ‘In A Cocktail Glass.’ This offering delivers a poignant, wistful explosion of urban pop and techno kayō, drawing inspiration from the whimsical world of 80s TV commercials and trendy dramas. The album paints a vivid picture of a city boy navigating memories of summer while embarking on artistic escapades, transporting listeners back to the dazzling bubble era of city pop.
What sets ‘In A Cocktail Glass’ apart from the bustling city pop revival is CRYSTAL’s distinctive sound, dubbed “Suburban (副都心) Pop.” This blend of nostalgia and freshness reinvents the classic city pop vibe with a playful twist. Each track glimmers like reflections in a cocktail glass, promising a journey filled with both whimsical fun and heartfelt nostalgia—an essential experience for both longtime fans and new listeners.
CRYSTAL, known for their retro-futuristic synth genius, caught the attention of Gaspard Auge (Justice) and Surkin, and have since captivated listeners globally. Helmed by Ryota Miyake (also known as FLAU artist Sparrows), their soundscape journeys through experimental new wave and techno, tinged with video game music influences—a dynamic blend that continues to captivate.
With Sunao Maruyama joining Miyake, CRYSTAL’s collaborative ventures have been noteworthy. Their 2013 project, GET IT, under French label Sound Pellegrino, featured a spot from producer and DJ Teki Latex. The 2015 album Crystal Station 64 welcomed a collaboration with Ikonika, and in 2016, they even jammed with the legendary Thundercat during RBMA Montreal. Remixes on platforms like Boysnoize Records further showcase their extraordinary synth prowess, solidifying CRYSTAL’s place in the global music scene.
