Sound of the Week: dvdv

In STARVVING, dvdv and producer Poly Armour create a haunting soundscape that navigates the complexities of connection and survival in a fast-paced world. This album merges ethereal vocals, pulsating electronic beats, and experimental pop, embodying the pressing hunger for meaning amidst chaos. With its exploration of longing and transcendence, it oscillates between sharp industrial tones and celestial harmonies, inviting listeners to confront their fears and embrace dreams.

The duo, reflecting on the manipulative nature of the digital age, emphasizes the internal struggle to express genuine emotions overshadowed by societal pressures. STARVVING serves as both a remedy and a mirror, fusing their shared sensitivity to dreams and emotions into a cohesive work that anticipates the disconnection prevalent in modern life. The album combines seraphic vocals with throbbing beats, crafting a unique blend of empathy and chaos that culminates in a cosmic experience.

From the experimental textures of their earlier releases to this polished offering, dvdv and Poly Armour have evolved their sound. STARVVING is rich in emotion, prompting listeners to question their fears and encouraging self-connection on a profound level. Its title cleverly plays on the dual themes of desperate longing and celestial aspirations, highlighting the transient beauty of existence.

As the album unfolds, the auditory tapestry shifts from vibrant electronic rhythms to serene ambient passages, leaving listeners suspended in a moment of grace. The final sounds dissolve into layers of ambience, encapsulating the essence of fleeting connections—a dreamy exploration of survival, be it as a streaking comet or a celestial entity.

The multidisciplinary artist behind the project, Phyllis Josefine (aka dvdv), immerses herself in the interplay of reality and digital realms. Her work—ranging from introspective musical compositions to innovative textile designs—focuses on renewal and self-reflection. Following her poignant debut in 2018, she has crafted intimate A/V experiences and collaborated with numerous artists, solidifying her position as a unique voice in contemporary music.

Her recent projects include a remix compilation featuring 12 artists and a score for a transhumanist film, showcasing her relentless creativity and commitment to pushing boundaries in art and technology. With accolades such as a nomination for the ROY Pop Price, dvdv continues to invite listeners into her world—an ever-evolving landscape of sound and vision.
