Emerging Dutch outfit Mood Bored have unleashed their highly anticipated EP, Too Much?, now available via Mattan Records. Having previously toured alongside the likes of Nations of Language and lent their support to Wolf Alice, Sorry, and Bdrmm, Mood Bored returns to the spotlight with a project that highlights their remarkable ability to craft expansive sonic landscapes while weaving captivating narratives throughout their music.
Too Much? marks a striking evolution in their sound and perspective, capturing the band’s journey from exuberant uncertainty to a more profound, introspective realm. The EP reflects a significant maturation, both sonically and emotionally, as it tackles the tough questions that young adults often grapple with. With exhilarating build-ups and cathartic releases, Mood Bored deftly navigates the line between clarity and chaos, offering listeners a dynamic experience.
Described as the anthem for a generation nestled between the anxiety of not having everything figured out and the relentless push to keep moving forward, Too Much? bursts with raw energy and honesty. The opening track, “Wake Up With You,” invites listeners in with its infectious dance elements, dizzying guitar riffs, and thoughtful lyrics, setting a spirited tone for the EP. The journey continues with “Out Loud,” characterized by its catchy riff and probing songwriting, and the band’s personal highlight, “Wet Faced & Ugly.” This latter single showcases a hauntingly beautiful mix of melancholic acoustic guitar and grunge-infused electric guitar drones, all underpinned by intricate lyricism that resonates deeply.
Closing out the EP is “All The Time,” where Mood Bored’s carefully curated sound paints a vivid picture of someone’s life slowly slipping away until they reach their breaking point. This track serves as a fitting capstone to what is arguably the band’s most fearless and cohesive body of work to date.
