Award-winning author and multidisciplinary artist Tice Cin unveils her latest endeavour, Keeping the House – The Mixtape, after the successful release of her self-directed film and single “I’m About.” Released under her label Neoprene Genie, this full-length mixtape serves as a sonic adaptation of her acclaimed debut novel, Keeping the House. With eight original tracks and remixes from artists like Ikonika and Nammy Wams, the project blends ambient rap, experimental electronic music, and poetic grime, crafting a cinematic narrative centred around community, the heroin trade, and survival.
This release complements Cin’s award-winning BBC Radio 4 documentary, How Much Can You Say?, which explores unheard voices in the North London drugs scene, particularly focusing on women and youth. “Drop by drop makes a lake,” Cin reflects. “This is a full sonic adaptation of my novel, made by us. It took a village. It tells a story set in and around the North London heroin trade, of heroin hidden inside the buds of a growing cabbage and transported to the UK from Turkey. Some of the songs are what happened off-camera. Some are how a scene sounded from the middle. Some are from beholders. I recorded each track thinking of the best way to tell you the story with no hesitation.”
Produced with Jersey club pioneer TAH, the mixtape draws from cold road mixtape culture and features Turkish sonic rarities, including a sample from classical music icon Zeki Müren, infusing the project with the bustling essence of North London’s underground.
Keeping the House – The Mixtape follows Neoprene Genie’s debut release, Live From the Metropolis, a poignant collaboration exploring London’s darker sides. Cin’s groundbreaking work has garnered numerous accolades, including a Society of Authors Somerset Maugham Prize and recognition as one of The Guardian’s Best Books of 2021.
Tice Cin continues to make her mark as a versatile artist, curating community projects and films while championing underrepresented voices within literature and music through Neoprene Genie.
