As a team, the photographers Lisa Knauer and Coda Johannes spent a month in Cape Town searching for inspiration and creating photos. They both work as freelance photographers and dedicate their lives to the world of art and photography. Lisa works with a digital camera, while Coda is passionate about analogue photography. Working together, they completed one another and brought together the best of both photo worlds.
The inspiration for this photoshoot came when thrift-shopping in Cape Town. Many 90s items gave us instant flashbacks. It was childhood memories from the brave, colourful and flashy era that caught Coda’s eyes. When he saw those bold colours and edgy clothes, the story of Pippi Longstockings, who invented the word „spunk“, flooded his mind like waves. To be edgy, bold wild and free is what this word stands for. It could be anything you need it to be.
It was also this raw energy that Coda and Lisa saw in the model and singer Yoyo Banyo. She’s got that spunk energy in every molecule of her body and soul. They wanted to honour Yoyo’s courage and inspirational character with a colourful, iconic and over the top photo shoot, that stands for the pure freedom to express yourself in any way you want.
