Systemic Shift: Berlin Fashion Week Redefines the Scope of Contemporary Design

Berlin Fashion Week has firmly established itself as a critical global hub where creative autonomy intersects with industrial evolution. Far from relying solely on the spectacle of the runway, Berlin’s seasonal schedule stands out for its structural engagement with sustainability, localised retail systems, and progressive design concepts. Driven by key structural forces like the Fashion Council Germany, the city continues to serve as an incubator for ideas that challenge the traditional luxury market. This season, three major pillars, METAMORPHOSIS, RAUM.Berlin and Studio2Retail reframe how fashion is discussed, exhibited, and experienced.

METAMORPHOSIS: Dialogues About Change

For those looking to analyse fashion as an economic and ecological blueprint rather than a fleeting consumer moment, the talk format METAMORPHOSIS, dialogues about change, powered by eBay, is an essential core program. Taking place from July 3 to 5, 2026, at the Hotel Amano East Side Berlin, this series of keynotes, interviews, and panel discussions features industry leaders analysing circular systems, technological integration, and systemic evolution.

Key contributors sharing their expertise include:

  • Sofie Delva (CEO of CIFF)

  • Muchaneta Ten Napel (Founder of Shape Innovate)

  • Angel Nemov (Business of Fashion)

  • Returning voices: Scott Lipinski, Alizee Verstraeten, and Fatima Njoya.

RAUM.Berlin: Subverting the Classical Runway

Returning for its third iteration, RAUM.Berlin takes over the John Jahr Haus (Kurfürstenstraße 72-74) as an alternative platform for collection presentation. Spanning four days, the exhibition allows 16 selected designers to construct their own presentation languages, merging fine art, installation, and performance.

The curated line-up highlights a deep devotion to craft and responsibility. Emerging names Lennart Bohle and Laura de Sousa offer new interpretations of traditional artisan techniques, while Anne Bernecker introduces hand-embroidered, upcycled textile art. Natascha von Hirschhausen further demonstrates the viability of high-end design rooted in strict zero-waste principles.

Studio2Retail: Decentralised Immersive Spaces

The Studio2Retail initiative decentralises the fashion week experience, taking viewers directly into the inner sanctums of Berlin’s design community to foster direct dialogue between creators and the public.

The individual activations emphasise architectural and thematic diversity. Richert Beil will unveil their first permanent brick-and-mortar location inside a preserved historic pharmacy, while Dennis Chuene opens his Kreuzberg atelier to create a direct dialogue with the street. Lou de Bètoly welcomes visitors into a tactile exhibition of intricate lace, knitwear, and beadwork accompanied by a pop-up store. Meanwhile, Ioannes hosts an Open Studio designed around casual exchange over drinks and retail, Plaid-à-Porter presents UNSEASONAL—a collection explicitly examining the climate crisis and changing seasons—and Esther Perbandt expands her visual language with Black Hearts, an immersive new retail experience housed at Fotografiska.
