TAAHLIAH has officially released her much-anticipated debut album, Gramarye, through her longtime label partner, untitled (recs). Following the buzz generated by her singles ‘Boys,’ ‘2018,’ and ‘Cherish,’ this LP marks a significant evolution in her sound—showcasing her unique vocals for the first time alongside invaluable contributions from Dev Hynes, known as Blood Orange.
In addition to her album launch, TAAHLIAH has announced an innovative new live set featuring strings, guitars, and live electronics. This dynamic performance debuted at ADE in Amsterdam on October 19th and will be performed at the ICA in London on October 30th, with tickets available for purchase here.
With Gramarye, TAAHLIAH invites listeners into a more introspective side of her artistry. The album dives into pop ballad songwriting, crafted through a series of interconnected self-sampling tracks that reveal her internal landscape. Following the success of her AIM award-winning EP Angelica, TAAHLIAH describes this new collection as a raw, confessional work, stating, “I always knew this record would somehow inhabit my emotions. Angelica was about my body, whereas Gramarye is about my mind.”
Key to the album’s development was TAAHLIAH’s collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra in 2023, which served as a pivotal source of inspiration. The Orchestra reimagined her compositions into an orchestral score, allowing TAAHLIAH to perform with live sampling, transforming the initial demos and setting the tone for the album’s bold direction. She reflects, “That’s when I knew I wanted it to sound as big as possible.”
The album’s title carries significant weight, derived from the folkloric term associated with magic and necromancy. TAAHLIAH discovered this term in an essay by Terre Thaemlitz (also known as DJ Sprinkles) in The Future Has a Silver Lining. Thaemlitz discusses the etymological connection between the English word ‘glamour’ and the Scottish term ‘grammar,’ linking it to the concept of gramarye—a fitting backdrop to the themes of TAAHLIAH’s project.
Known for her prowess as a DJ and dance producer, TAAHLIAH has carved out an impressive presence in the music scene. From viral Boiler Room performances to appearing at Glastonbury, her approach to club music has solidified her status within the Glasgow club circuit. With Gramarye, she explores the intersection of emotional pop songwriting and genre-defying soundscapes, reflecting the ongoing evolution within the international music scene.
This debut album is TAAHLIAH’s boldest statement to date, merging confessional lyricism with energetic dance rhythms that encapsulate the spirit of her exhilarating club sets. Gramarye promises to showcase all facets of this emerging artist’s creative vision.
