Tangible Earth in a Screen-Bound World: “Digital Trace” Brings Chilean Ceramics to Berlin Art Week

Marking a major international milestone for Chile’s contemporary art landscape, Santiago-based Galería Biophilia arrives in Berlin with the collective exhibition Digital Trace in Contemporary Ceramics. Taking over KSTN – Projektraum Berlin in Kreuzberg during Berlin Art Week, the showcase opens on September 10, bringing together 100 striking ceramic pieces by Chilean and international artists.

At the core of Digital Trace is a confrontation between the immateriality of the screen and the undeniable, physical weight of fired earth. Featuring an exclusive curatorial essay by renowned cultural theorist Celeste Olalquiaga, the exhibition reflects on how our fingers have shifted from manipulating physical matter to scrolling across glass surfaces—and how ceramics acts as a radical return to texture, form, and the tactile pleasure of touch.

“To the extent that tactility transformed into digitality, our fingers shifted from modeling matter to steering our mental transit into the virtual dimension. Today, ceramics stands as a full-fledged artistic practice where form and texture recover the forgotten pleasure of touch, allowing our fingers to leave a mark that seemed lost.” — Celeste Olalquiaga

The 100 exhibited works contrast the fleeting digital footprint with the permanent memory of hands pressed into raw clay. From fluid organic sculptures to technical experiments with regional clays, raw glazes, and extreme firing processes, the show captures why contemporary ceramics has evolved from traditional craft into one of today’s most vital sculptural mediums.
