“This shoot’s main purpose was to explore and celebrate black lives and all lives here in Japan. The fusion of fashion and sociology was the most difficult and yet the most satisfying thing to balance out for this shoot. The creative industry here in Japan is quite oversaturated but still very biased. It is quite rare to see people of colour on billboards in the streets of Shibuya or in the metro. So that was the biggest reason why my team and I tried to change that situation, or at least try it in a creative way to make fashion’s gaze more representative! Our aim is to make Tokyo in revolt so that other creators wake up and realise the importance of representation.”
