The inspiration for ‘Baggy Jeans’ struck during her first US tour, where audiences reacted positively to her radical personal style—a thrilling mix of Berlin and New York streetwear. With this new offering, Dornika continues to dismantle preconceived notions about how AFAB individuals should express their identities, all while shining a spotlight on the women and queer folks shaping today’s vibrant streetwear scene, which cis men have long dominated.
In her own words, Dornika states, “I feel now is the moment for everyone to embrace their authenticity! I wrote this track inspired by people’s reactions to my outfits while walking the streets of New York. After playing my show in LA, I created this track with fresh inspiration alongside producer Ari Carpenter, while Angel Cintron’s angelic backing vocals added that extra magic.”
Dornika shares her history with fashion, revealing, “Since I was young, I was obsessed with baggy boy clothes. I craved big T-shirts and oversized pants, but that was frowned upon in my culture. As a girl, I was often pushed to wear clothing that made me appear thinner and more feminine. In the last few years, I’ve embraced my authentic style, living out my childhood boy-inspired fantasy, and I often find myself dressing better than a lot of the guys I see. They even come up to me saying how much they want to dress like me! I aimed to create a track that empowers others to dance, feel confident, and sexy.”
Since her groundbreaking debut during the pandemic, Dornika has graced over 100 stages across Europe, including headlining Pride events in Berlin, Munich, Copenhagen, Prague, and Rotterdam. Her collaborations with industry giants like Spotify and Netflix, along with performances at iconic festivals such as Lollapalooza, Fusion, and Whole Festival, mark her as a force to be reckoned with.
‘Baggy Jeans’ is just the beginning—a tantalising taste of a series of singles we can expect from Dornika this year. Keep your ears tuned in; the best is yet to come!
