Video Premiere: Emina Sonnad – Sad Man

Crafted by the visionary Laura Martinova, the accompanying music video for “Sad Man” transcends traditional storytelling. Shot across various Berlin locales, it portrays Emina serenading the narrative of ‘The Sad Man’—his face perpetually obscured, emphasizing his hollow, parasitic essence. The deliberate separation of their paths in the visual narrative underscores the emotional chasm post-relationship, enveloped in a veil of dark humour and haunting melancholy. More than just a music video, it’s a poetic homage to Berlin’s architectural beauty and an intriguing narrative of distant yet intertwined existences.

Introducing ‘Sad Man’ – A Shift in Paradigm

Emerging from the ethereal realms of bedroom pop, Emina Sonnad and her sister first captured the indie scene under the moniker “Rainbowfish” in 2012. Crafting their sound in the quaint confines of their room, the duo enchanted an unsuspecting online audience with their dream-infused ukulele tunes and piercingly incisive lyrics on platforms like Tumblr and Reddit.

Years weaved through a tapestry of roles—from a software engineer to an EDM vocalist and part of the folk ensemble “Half A Disaster”—only enriched her sonic palette. However, it was in 2021 that Emina took the bold step to carve her path under her name. Although her initial singles whispered into the ears of her dedicated followers, it was a 2023 collaboration revisiting her symbiotic partnership with her sister that set the digital sphere ablaze. The track “Turn the Record Over” surged to over 15,000 streams in just its debut day, marking the beginning of Emina’s ascent to widespread acclaim, cascading to over a million cumulative streams by year’s end.

In the latest thread from her upcoming debut album, Thought it Would Be Pretty but it’s Not, expected to drop in the simmering heat of Summer 2024, “Sad Man” marks a deliberate pivot from the introspective ‘sad girl’ theme to spotlight the emotionally stunted and manipulative male archetype. This track delves into the psyche of ‘The Sad Man,’ a figure who manipulates empathy to scaffold his fragile ego, only to leave desolation in his wake. Yet, despite the heartbreak he orchestrates, the more profound tragedy lies within him—he’s bound to the confines of his character.

Step into the evolving world of Emina Sonnad, where music meets poignant storytelling and the unspoken is sung loud.
