Yasemin Akgül, an innovative designer, aspires to redefine haute couture with her latest collection, “Human.” Known for her luxurious and extravagant aesthetics, Akgül’s designs capture the attention of fashion aficionados and industry insiders alike, particularly during the prestigious Milan Fashion Week.
“Human” delves deep into the intersection of baroque opulence and contemporary social issues, particularly focusing on the stark realities of social inequality. This collection is not merely an artistic endeavour; it serves as a poignant critique of systems such as the fast-fashion industry, which often perpetuates cycles of misery and exploitation for countless individuals.

“In collaboration with my brother Ümit Kamil Akgül – a graphic designer, illustrator, and visual artist – several of the fabrics were hand-painted and artistically treated, making the pieces not only couture creations but also wearable art.”

The collection’s narrative unfolds from simple, white origins to more ornate and voluminous silhouettes, symbolising the journey from poverty to wealth and highlighting the widening social disparities. Akgül reinterprets the grandeur of Baroque design through modern lenses, utilising luxurious materials such as satin, velvet, lace, and brocade, which are adorned with intricate embroidery, Swarovski stones, and pearls. These elements embody the splendour of the past while simultaneously highlighting the shortcomings of present-day fashion practices.
Each piece within the “Human” collection serves as a visual metaphor for the social and economic challenges many face daily. By weaving together stories of inequality, resistance, hope, and power, Akgül’s aim is to create a fashion experience that encourages reflection and advocates for social justice.
The standout piece, an asymmetrical red outfit, encapsulates the collection’s essence, representing the deep injustices and disparities that permeate society. Its design calls for recognition and action, emphasising the need to confront and address these imbalances head-on.
With “Human,” Yasemin Akgül invites audiences not only to appreciate high fashion but to engage with the critical social issues it represents, marking a significant moment in contemporary haute couture.
