ABAYA ROCKS

In the enchanting streets of Paris, Salma Zahore, a queer Arab performer, collaborated with photographer Mohsen Othman (Le Mosen), an esteemed Egyptian photographer and art director based in Paris for an editorial photoshoot that centred around the theme of “Abaya.” A KALTBLUT exclusive.

Notably, the Abaya isn’t a religious garment but a cultural one, underlining a rich tapestry of traditions and personal expression. Against the ongoing debate in France over banning religious symbols in public schools, this photoshoot assumed a significant and thought-provoking stance.

It raised pertinent questions about how we define an Abaya and distinguish it from a conventional long dress. Salma’s presence in the heart of Paris was a resounding celebration of cultural diversity and self-identity.

In a climate where such freedoms are increasingly under scrutiny in France, this artistic endeavour served as a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing individuality and respecting personal choices, while shedding light on the complex interplay between culture and religion in the contemporary world.
