BWA Wrocław: Exhibition of the finalists of the 14th Geppert Competition

In the ever-evolving landscape of the art world, the 14th Geppert Competition at Wrocław’s BWA Wrocław Główny gallery stands as a beacon, transcending traditional inquiries about the purpose and necessity of art. Departing from conventional questioning, this year’s edition of the competition delves into the realm of artistic expression amidst a tumultuous world.

The Geppert Competition has long been a platform that invites contemplation on the essence of painting and the role of artists. However, the focus has shifted in this year’s iteration, emphasising the enduring need for art in a world grappling with its chaos and uncertainty.

This year’s competition is tailored to artists who utilise painting as their creative medium, having graduated from an art college between 2018 and 2022. The event unfolds through two pivotal components: a qualifying symposium and a competition exhibition. The symposium serves as a stage for esteemed experts to nominate what they deem the most compelling female and male painters. From this selection, the jury meticulously curates the finalists who showcase their work in the competition exhibition.

The focus this year is less on the medium used and more on the artists who bring their creations to life. Their emotions, experiences, dreams, and desires serve as the driving force behind their works, transcending the boundaries of conventional painting techniques.

In this edition, exceptions to the traditional painting rules manifest in the form of assemblages, animations, and multimedia works. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the distinct painting worlds of these talented individuals, defying generational categorisations. Despite the diversity in personal motifs, painting techniques, and working strategies, a common thread unites these artists—their works are born from the intricate interplay between heart and head, anxiety and intimacy, pain and love.

As one navigates through the exhibition, the prevalence of figuration and the human figure becomes apparent, holding significant meaning in an age dominated by post-human narratives in contemporary art. The profound exploration of humanity stands as a testament to its enduring importance in a rapidly evolving world.
