Video Premiere: Citizenn – Someone (Just Like her) Ft. Liz Cass

LA-based label Culprit bring in the new year with a debut from one of London’s rising house/techno stars, Laurence Blake aka Citizenn. The Nottingham native carries on the proud tradition of incorporating London’s underground music scene with vibrant ideas and top-notch execution. Completed by an eerie video by Nonothing, Citizenn’s alias for visual projects, he collaborates with singer-songwriter and DJ Liz Cass on an evocative vocal that fashions “Someone” into something unique in the artist’s catalogue.

“I love the idea of creating visuals for my music, I’ve always found it gives me a deeper understanding of my intentions for that track and allows me to collaborate and expand my understanding of how my music is perceived. The song is about identity and loss and I wanted to create something that subtlety illustrated the theme of Liz’s lyrics by projecting her moving image onto the static body of a faceless torso. I had actually planned to do this using practical effects but my recent work in AR and simulation led me down a strictly in box solution. Liz recorded her parts on an iPhone and I stayed up with coffee starring at a monitor for several hours clicking things.”

Citizenn grew up around the hedonistic DIY scene in his hometown of Nottingham later relocating to London where the project really took shape. Racking multiple releases with labels such as Love Fever Records, Crosstown Rebels, 2020Vision and Madtech and playing in venues as diverse as Fabric, DC10 and Panorama Bar, Citizenn Continues to expand his sound and vision through solo experiments and collaboration.
