On July 10th, Galerie Grolman will open its doors to The Weight of Tenderness, a compelling solo exhibition by Berlin-based painter Tobias Vetter. Bringing together approximately twenty works—including several new pieces created specifically for this show, the exhibition offers a nuanced exploration of masculinity, intimacy, and emotional vulnerability.

In a contemporary landscape where discussions surrounding male identity are frequently dominated by rigid societal expectations, pre-defined roles, and performance metrics, Vetter’s paintings provide a quieter, more reflective counterpoint. Rather than attempting to redefine masculinity or dictate what a man should be, the works invite the viewer to encounter their subjects entirely outside familiar archetypes of strength, success, or absolute certainty.
Operating in the fluid space between figuration and abstraction, Vetter builds layered pictorial environments where memory, imagination, and lived experience intersect. His protagonists are neither heroes nor cultural symbols; instead, they are portrayed in quiet states of playfulness, contemplation, and solitude. These everyday moments of intimacy resist simple, binary interpretation, allowing vulnerability and emotional openness to exist without the need for justification.

The exhibition directly reflects the core tenets of Vetter’s broader artistic practice, which consistently navigates the tension between inherited social expectations and individual sensitivity. While firmly rooted in personal experience, the paintings transcend autobiography, transforming intimate psychological states into broader representations of the human condition.

Ultimately, The Weight of Tenderness proposes a shift in perspective. It invites visitors to momentarily dismantle inherited assumptions and engage with the individual before assigning them a social role, positioning vulnerability not as a deficit of strength, but as a fundamental element of being human.
