D.N.I S/S23: An ode to the Peruvian Summer Culture

Through a walking tour along with the seashore sunset, the Peruvian twins behind D.N.I, transport us to the warmth of the Peruvian summer culture in their new S/S23 collection. Entitled «Playa, Ceviche y Picarón» Paulo and Roberto Ruiz Muñoz, present pieces that refer to the elements of a classic summer on the beach of Huanchaco, located near their native Casagrande in La Libertad, Peru.

A large part of the designers’ childhood was spent on walks to the beach where they enjoyed the summers eating ceviche and picarones – renowned Peruvian dishes – while looking at the sea. Paulo and Roberto decide to pay tribute to these memories through their most recent SS23 collection, full of light materials and iconography full of colour.

The pieces relate the life on the beach and reinterpret classic summer elements in northern Peru; from moto-taxis, food, the iconic national soda drink and ice cream, to the traditional Caballitos de Totora (reed boats used by fishers in Peru). A collection of shirts, shorts and pants full of vitality, in which D.N.I explore new colours such as light pink, melon and solar yellow, which refer to a landscape full of sand and sunsets. In SS23 «Playa, Ceviche y Picarón» we can also find hand-embroidered applications with sea shells in nacre stone (mother-of-pearl), which are typically used in bracelets by itinerant artisans on the shores of Peruvian beaches in the north of the country.
The firm continues to work with different types of cotton, this time with lighter characteristics such as nansú; or thicker textures that are used for fabrics with characteristic shapes of the brand such as their classic hearts or chess forms.

This is how elements typical of the Peruvian beach culture, manual applications and light materials, represent the close relationship between the twins and their childhood memories in the northern Peruvian summer.
