“The concept of the female gaze challenges the traditional ways people are portrayed in visual storytelling. For far too long, male subjects have been depicted through a lens that emphasizes hyper-masculinity and often perpetuates toxic stereotypes. As a model with years of experience in front of the camera, I have personally encountered the male gaze, where my image was shaped by the eyes and intentions of male photographers. I’ve observed a prevailing trend of women, as well as men, being objectified and reduced to mere objects of desire and representing in the hands of some male photographers.

In this editorial, titled “Delicate,” I sought to subvert these norms by presenting my friend, Dieter, in a different light. Dieter is often associated with a very masculine appearance and adorned with tattoos, is more than just a surface level representation. He has faced numerous challenges, and through personal growth, has become one of the most compassionate individuals I know. My intention was to capture the beauty in his complexity, showcasing the sides of him that are seldom highlighted.

As a female photographer, I felt a responsibility to capture Dieter’s essence through a perspective that resonates with my own female gaze. It is an intimate and empathetic lens focusing on moments of vulnerability, strength, contemplation, and daydreams. Through these images shot on film, I aimed to showcase the multifaceted nature of Dieter, celebrating his humanity beyond the confines of stereotypical masculinity.

In challenging the status quo, “Delicate” embraces the idea that male subjects can be depicted in ways that honor their emotions and depth, dismantling the limitations of traditional gender norms. By capturing Dieter’s authentic self, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse representation of men in visual storytelling, one that celebrates the richness of the human experience regardless of gender.”
