Taiwanese experimental artist SABIWA collaborates with Italian composers Queimada and Nathan L. on their intriguing new EP, Sons of _, out now on Phantom Limb. The project blends field recordings with orchestrated sounds, noise, and elements of Taiwanese folklore.
The trio aims to create a unique sonic landscape that draws listeners into a reflective space filled with sound, visuals, and untold stories. Though based in mainland Europe, SABIWA, Queimada, and Nathan L. bring various influences to their collaborative debut, each adding depth to Sons of _. SABIWA’s voice is heavily processed, creating a haunting quality that plays against a surreal visual backdrop. The contributions from Queimada and Nathan L. introduce a range of sounds from mechanical noises to intense waves of sound, pushing the boundaries of traditional music structures.
Standout tracks include “What is true is not true – 無明大夢,” which features a rare recognizable rhythm and a melodic vocal loop that evolves amidst chaotic electronic textures. Meanwhile, “The Root of Unwilled Existence – 無自性” delves into darker soundscapes, filled with unsettling harmonies and psychedelic echoes. Lead single “Nothing blue – 無憂無慮” captures a dreamlike, otherworldly essence, blending different realms as if the aftermath of a fallen Tower of Babel lingers. The track features raw distortion, cinematic strings reminiscent of a James Bond film, and SABIWA’s unique vocal style, eventually settling into a relaxed rhythm with church bells and a crackling snare.
SABIWA, originally from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, now resides in Berlin and has a background in sound production and audio-visual performance. She creatively combines natural and synthetic sounds and has recently released the acclaimed album Island no.16 – Memories of Future Landscapes.
Nathan L. (Lorenzo Colocci) is a multifaceted artist skilled in classical composition and improvisation, while Queimada, now based in Copenhagen, focuses on blending electroacoustic samples and field recordings. Their works have been featured in festivals across Europe, showcasing their innovative approaches to music.
Phantom Limb, founded by James Vella in 2017, is known for releasing diverse music and supporting independent artists within the music industry.
