Embracing Transformation: Hua Wang & Emanuel Heim’s "Natural Inversions"

Die Suche

In an evocative dialogue between the tactile and the ethereal, artists Hua Wang and Emanuel Heim unveil their latest works in “Natural Inversions.” This exhibition at Lottumstraße 14 showcases a dynamic interplay of paintings and sculptures that probe the intricate relationship between nature, technology, and spiritual transformation.

In our current epoch, characterised by relentless innovation and an undercurrent of uncertainty, Wang and Heim’s artistic explorations resonate profoundly. Drawing inspiration from the age-old adage that claims nothing is new under the sun, they deftly challenge this notion. Their creations unravel familiar concepts, inviting the viewer to engage with a reality defined by flux, where traditional moral and aesthetic standards dissolve into new forms.

“Schutzraum” and “Freiraum” are artworks based on reflections about the connection of safe spaces and spaces where one feels free to create, and how, for me, they are represented in different landscapes. The community that I became part of and co-created in the hostile urban environment makes me feel safe to be myself and the anonymity of the city gives me space to express myself freely. Whereas the solitude I feel in forests and in my studio gives me space to create and act freely. I need both surroundings in my life; they feed each other and make one another possible.

Emanuel Heim’s abstract paintings ascend through dynamic geometric architectures that breathe both movement and instability. His magnum opus, “Die Suche 3” (2024), emerges as a psychologically charged canvas depicting figures navigating an ever-shifting landscape that merges the internal with the external. This powerful visual journey becomes an allegory for desire, vulnerability, and self-discovery, inviting viewers to revisit their personal landscapes of emotion.

Conversely, Hua Wang harmonises materiality and transcendence in her sculptural practice. Her latest series weaves together ceramics, glass, and aluminium, culminating in an installation centred around “Bodhi, 2009 (2026),” a mesmerising structure adorned with gold coins that gesture towards ritualistic contemplation. Each smaller piece serves as a meditative microcosm, a quiet testament to the unseen worlds awaiting exploration.

Wang and Heim’s artistic synergy creates a dialogue that oscillates between abstraction and presence, the spiritual and the profane. By inviting viewers to embrace uncertainty, they propose a generative space in which transformation is not merely possible but inevitable. “Natural Inversions” promises to be a thought-provoking exhibition that encourages its audience to revel in the beauty of the unknown and the potential for rebirth amidst change.

Der innere Strauß
2026, oil on canvas, 160*130cm, framed in oak
The title is written with a German “ß”, which we don’t use in the Swiss way of writing German, because I found out about the old German word Strauß, meaning argument/fight. I connect the image of a bouquet (also Strauß) very much with the feeling of an argument – many different aspects are being compressed into one composition. This reflects the overwhelming amount of information that reaches us and the complexity of feelings and reflections happening as a result in my mind and body.
