Julia Alexandra S. a fashion and portraiture photographer based in London. She graduated from the London College of Fashion where she pursued a master’s degree in Fashion Photography.
Her work looks to combine the past with the present through fashion and socially imposed standards, aiming to open a dialogue on the politics of identity, gender, and religion. She uses photography as a storytelling medium where she combines traditional folklore and myths with fast-fashion clothing and accessories, starting a discussion on consumerism and how it impacts oneself.
‘Ephe(me)ral’ is a mystical tale that talks about the stigma of ‘Prince Charming’, how he was built by writers and people of the time, much like the knights or the stories of Robin Hood. The project is based on my interest in folklore and fairytales that traditionally had political means and were much deeper than we were led to believe. The project can be seen as a contemporary approach at unpacking the concept of ‘Prince Charming’ who he was, and what he was meant to deliver. I looked to demystify him or better said, take him off his white horse and incorporate him into pop culture, something that we are more used to seeing. This metamorphosis, much like the case of Venus for women, allowed a sense of freedom to install, liberation from all the stereotypes imposed on men. We now understand the toxicity with which he was and continues to be used, a product fabricated by society.”
