Exclusive Mixtape: Escapism Refuge

Building upon the success of downtempo trip-hop inspired singles ‘Drifting’ and ‘Misfit’, Jason Beukes, aka Escapism Refuge, follows with his debut album ‘Hold’ via UK indie label Deep Heads, with featured guests Zeb Samuels, Charli Brix and Ill Chill. Hailing from South Africa, Jasons has earned himself a mass following through his crafting of ambient, electronic soundscapes. Jason’s affinity with rhythm was revealed when he began playing the drums at 13. A passion for textured beats was ignited which saw the young musician delve into production – simultaneously studying ‘Contemporary Music’ and putting out a string of critically acclaimed EPs under his moniker. Catch a glimpse into Jason’s work with his mix of personal picks.

“A month after the album was made I decided to work on an influences mix that was made with a selection of songs that inspired a lot on the album which I was listening to right before I made it. Listening to artists like Jamie XX and Nosaj Thing helped with finding a balance between making electronic beats with a more melodic feel on top. The songs from musicians like Floex, The Cinematic Orchestra and Go Go Penguin where all songs that were responsible for the melodic foundation of the album which I found weren’t clearly defined into classical or jazz. All the songs in the mix were in that vein with a few songs from the album as well as an exclusive remix from Synkro.”
