Exclusive Mixtape: Klein Zage

Klein Zage just released the enlightening ‘Womanhood’ EP via her own Orphan imprint on 1st March, so to celebrate we requested a little mix. The label’s third release features three slick house and UKG beats, including a title track announcing itself as “a nihilistic declaration of menstruation”, alongside remixes from DJ Python, Local Artist and Ariel Zetina. Hit play below and get a little taster of the release alongside classics from Equiknoxx, Massive Attack, Octo Octa and a soon to be released track from Joey G.

“This mix is exclusively made up of Orphan. party, radio & records alums! From one of our first ever Bunker nights in Deptford with Tim Goldsworthy (DFA/Mo’Wax) to more recent soirees in Seattle with Equiknoxx, in person radio sets with D. Tiffany & Octo Octa to guest mixes from Reckonwrong and of course, Orphan.s own 12”s courtesy of Yasha, Klein Zage and the *soon to be released* Joey G – it’s an Orphan. family affair.”

Orphan. was founded by Joe Gillick, Billy Meddleton and Sage Redman in London in September of 2015. Orphan. started as a bi-monthly club night in Deptford, hosting the likes of Tim Goldsworthy (DFA, Mo’Wax, UNKLE), Dave Okumu (The Invisible, Jessie Ware), The Golden Filter (Optimo), Micachu and more. Orphan. parties aimed to feature the unsung heroes, the seminal artists that weren’t often regulars in the crowded London club circuit. Come 2017 the trio found themselves divided by an ocean – Joe and Sage forced to relocate in Seattle after her visa expiration, and Billy to Berlin. Despite the distance, Orphan. carried on with events in each location (hosting the likes of DJ Python, Equiknoxx, DEBIT, Neo Image, Sylvere and many more) and launched Orphan. Radio in Seattle as an ode to the London stations they’d come to miss. Orphan. Radio’s focus was to showcase local artists and DJs, highlighting the diverse music community in Seattle, as well as feature touring national and international artists with their own distinctive flare. Guests included Shanti Celeste, Octo Octa, DJ Manny & DJ Taye, Moodhuts’ Neo Image & Local Artist and many more. After two solid years on air the station closed its doors to make way for a new chapter in the Orphan. storybook – New York.

Following the labels first two 12″s from Gillick’s club moniker Yasha in the summer of 2018, Or.003 arrives March 1 as Klein Zage’s debut EP, Womanhood. Ft remixes by Orphan party alumni DJ Python, Ariel Zetina and Local Artist.

On Thursday, March 28th Orphan will be throwing a party with Sweat Equity at Jupiter Disco. Lineup: Klein Zage, Kellen303, St. Mozelle, Outer Limit & Joey G

Klein Zage will also be included on the upcoming Femme Culture x He For She compilation in collaboration with UN Women, calling for gender equality. Released April 5th, 2019. More info here
