“Fall In” to the Luxurious Funky Sounds of Highschool Jacob

Enter my friend and yours: Highschool Jacob is a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter who is making all the rounds in the modern pop scene with his diverse and eclectic talents and influences. From jabbing the ivories at age four to strumming the strings at ten, Jacob’s musical odyssey through classical theory and jazz piano in high school set the stage for his artistic evolution. Post-college, Jacob ventured into the world of film scoring, honing his production prowess and crafting a genre-bending sound reminiscent of musical maestros like Porches, Still Woozy, and Pharrell Williams, as well as the 1975’s effervescent pop-rock approach.

With hits like “Mind Games” and “Die 4 U,” Highschool Jacob has amassed a loyal following on platforms like Spotify and Hype Machine. His EP “HSJ 2020” turned heads with interactive video games linked to each song’s cover art in a move that I don’t think I’ve seen since Iron Maiden came out with Ed Hunter in 1999, but I digress… With the drop of his latest single “Fall in” and an upcoming EP, plus electrifying live shows featuring his new four-piece band, Highschool Jacob’s musical journey promises a thrilling ride ahead, showcasing his evolving sound and visionary artistry.

“Fall in” is a stunning piece full of pop with broad brushstrokes of neo/future funk flavour that boosts the track, and if you’ve been at all digging the Japanese scene, it’s also a huge pleasure to see Western artists exploring and playing with these amazing and infectious sounds.

“‘fall in’ is about letting yourself get wrapped up in the moment. I wanted to write a song about the excitement and anticipation that comes with trying something new with someone new. Every section of the song feels distinct while leading into the next to show off a herky jerky spirit that can accompany a night out. I also leaned into some of my old electronic music roots but played with harsh cuts between samples and synths to give it a DIY yet polished feel.” Highschool Jacob

In the creation of “fall in,” Highschool Jacob joined forces with a diverse group of songwriters, producers, and musicians, opting for a more conventional studio setting. Departing from his usual solo music-making process, this track took on a distinct character through collaborative efforts. The recording took place at Just For The Record in Los Angeles, with Matt Cerritos and Moritz Braun handling the engineering and mixing duties for this song and the rest of the EP.
