Brooklyn-based Brandon Markell Holmes’ single, “FTW,” is the first from his new album, “Try.” The track is a lovely combination of profound ideas and a cheerful melody. With his smooth manner and emotive sense, Holmes takes us to a great music realm where darkness and light blend superbly.
“FTW,” co-written by Silvan Strauss and co-produced by Robert PM, is well-crafted and strong. It blends genres in a manner that reminds you of N.E.R.D.’s most experimental moments. But it remains faithful to the vibrant, sunny sound of vocal house. Holmes employs his smooth, shiny tones over this fashionable backdrop, which evokes both warmth and lucidity and readily transports the listener from blue moods to sunny spots.
The track is imbued with a powerful message regarding strength and support from the community. Holmes describes the track and its theme: “In the midst of stormy weather, we can still look to the positive and our community for strength.” Things are not always easy, yet he points out what is truly important: “gratitude, positivity, and appreciation for the people and moments that make those difficult days not just bearable, but meaningful.” It’s a harsh reality presented in heartfelt honesty, encouraging people not to give up.
“Being part of this project was an absolute joy. It reminded me that creativity is everywhere. On every street, behind every door, and sometimes, the most exciting chapters begin with a single bold step.” Said the video director, Taylor DeCosta
Holmes typically incorporates social messages, strong emotion, and spiritual concepts in his work, which has earned him accolades through the years. Holmes collaborates with popular acts such as Musclecars, JKriv, and Byron The Aquarius, producing performances in NYC clubs, revealing his authentic self. His work is heard globally; he collaborated with Gorillaz on their GRAMMY-nominated album “Humanz” and garnered acclaim from Billboard, the BBC, and Afropunk for his visual EP “Inertia,” renowned for blending various styles and delving into the archives.
Outside of performing and recording, Brandon devotes just as much energy to education. Shortly, Brandon will have a Master of Science Degree in Education and has spent time working towards his graduate degree while also being a devoted special education teacher for the 7th through the 12th graders in Humanities.
