In 1993, graphic designers Markus and Daniel Freitag were in search of a functional, water-repellent, and durable bag to carry their creative work. Inspired by the colourful heavy traffic passing through the Zurich transit intersection in front of their apartment, they created a messenger bag using used truck tarpaulins, discarded bicycle inner tubes, and car seat belts. This is how the first FREITAG bags came to life in the living room of their shared apartment—each one recycled, each one unique.
With this innovative approach, the company unintentionally sparked a revolution in the world of bag-making. Its impact has since been felt in Zurich, across Europe, and even in Asia, making FREITAG the unofficial outfitter for urban, bike-riding individuals. Today, FREITAG products are available in 29 stores worldwide and through over 300 resellers. The FREITAG Online Store offers a wide selection of more than 4,000 unique products.
