Last week we were invited to spend a few days at ME Sitges Terramar powered by Me by Melia. What a dreamlike hotel. Situated directly on the beach that it was hard for us to enjoy the spacious and beautiful hotel room.

ME Sitges Terramar is located in the vibrant Paseo Marítimo in Sitges, surrounded by palm trees and by the sea. The hotel offers a quiet and relaxing environment with bars, restaurants and shops – all in close proximity.

Of course we did not spend the days in Spain only at the beach or pool. Me by Melia was part of the Sonar+D and organized the program “Deep Meditations” with the artist Memo Akten.

So they drove us to Barcelona on the second day of the trip where we had the opportunity to explore the Sonar+D and Sonar festival. (More about the festival at the end of the week.) And one of the highlights was without question Memo Akten´s Deep Meditations!

From the collaboration between Sónar+D and the hotel brand ME by Meliá arises a connection that unites both brands with avant-garde artistic imaginaries generating shared creative universes. As a result of this fusion, appears the collaboration with the artist Memo Akten, who exhibited his “Deep Meditations” piece at ME London in May.

The Deep Meditations installation by Memo Akten invites us to contemplate. For this piece, the artist has fed an artificial neural network with internet images labeled as “everything”, and images labeled with concepts like “universe”, “love”, “art”, “life”, or “faith”, however, the neural network processes the pictures according to the aesthetic content.

Using bespoke tools, the artist makes a meticulous exploration of the images that mutate slowly to the rhythm of a soundtrack equally created from prayers and spiritual chants scraped from Youtube, so that the neural network blends all the sounds into one.

This visual and sonic meditation oscillates between abstract and representational, hyper-real and painterly to induce the audience in a contemplation state, inviting them to reconstruct the images and imagine their own stories.

Artist, researcher and coder, Memo Akten uses computation as an artistic medium, finding inspiration in the worlds of science, technology, nature, ethics, and spirituality. Currently he is a PhD candidate investigating human-machine interaction with the aim of facilitating the creative collaboration between humans and machines.
