Ignorance & Freedom

IGNORANCE & FREEDOM is a short film and original music piece exploring the fragile tension between two fundamental human states: the fear of the unknown and the courage to exist beyond it. Rather than following a linear narrative, the film unfolds as an intimate encounter between two bodies, “Ignorance & Freedom”. Set within the confined space of a bar, their interaction evolves through gaze, distance, and physical proximity. What begins as hesitation transforms into a charged exchange, where movement replaces language and tension becomes choreography.

Ignorance is not portrayed as hatred, but as something more complex: a learned distance shaped by fear, privilege, and disconnection. It carries a certain naivety, almost childlike in its inability to process what it does not understand. Drawn to the presence of Freedom, it moves too close, crossing boundaries not out of malice, but out of a lack of awareness. It is unstable, reactive, and at times destructive, yet never entirely fixed.

Freedom, in contrast, exists as a state of presence: unapologetic, grounded, and self-aware. It understands both its softness and its power. Rather than seeking to convince or confront, it simply exists, holding space, setting boundaries, and allowing reflection without force. Its strength lies in choice: knowing when to engage and when to remain untouched.

The dynamic between both characters is expressed through a sensual, acrobatic duet performed by two female-presenting bodies. Their physical closeness challenges normative perceptions of intimacy—not as spectacle, but as a natural and unfiltered expression of connection. Within this, the film positions itself clearly as a queer/FLINTA+ project: not as a label, but as a lived perspective embedded in casting, movement, and gaze.

Visually, the film contrasts two distinct worlds. Ignorance appears in monochrome—structured, controlled, almost theatrical in its rigidity. Freedom exists in color—fluid, organic, and emotionally expansive. These aesthetics draw from surrealist and avant-garde influences, where fashion, performance, and cinematic language merge into a symbolic landscape rather than a fixed reality.

The original 5-minute track mirrors this duality. A minimal soundscape of cigarette noise and silence evolves into a dialogue between cello and distorted electric guitar, stability meeting disruption, softness confronting intensity. The vocal performance deepens this contrast further, moving between depth and fragility, strength and vulnerability, carried by a non-binary voice that resists fixed categorization and embodies multiplicity.

In the final moment, the dynamic shifts. The lighter changes hands. Freedom lights the cigarette for itself, a deliberate act of autonomy. What may appear as a small gesture becomes a quiet assertion of control: the right to choose, to act, and to exist without permission. In a context where FLINTA+ bodies are still regulated, observed, or restricted, even in something as mundane as smoking—this gesture becomes symbolic. It challenges outdated dynamics of control and intimacy, where power is often disguised as care.

IGNORANCE & FREEDOM does not resolve into clarity. Instead, it lingers in recognition: subtle, unresolved, yet irreversible. Because change does not happen through force, but through the quiet possibility of seeing differently.
