‘Mountainhead’ delves deeper into Everything Everything’s an examination of how future technology can threaten humanity, presenting a society called the ‘Mountainhead’ where the elite reside at the peak while those at the bottom are tasked with maintaining their elevated status. While this concept reflects a nightmarish future, it serves as a metaphor for capitalism, environmentalism, religion, and celebrity worship, providing a thought-provoking reflection of our current existence.

Frontman Jonathan Higgs explains that in this alternate world, society has constructed an immense mountain. Society revolves around the growth of this mountain, with a dominant mountain religion influencing all aspects of life. At the top of the mountain lies a rumoured mirror that reflects endless images of the self, while a giant golden snake at the bottom represents the primal fear of its believers. A ‘Mountainhead’ is someone who firmly believes in the mountain’s growth regardless of the cost or the hardships faced dwelling in the great pit.

The album also continues Everything Everything’s exploration of the power and implications of AI, a theme they addressed long before it dominated cultural conversations. Their previous record, ‘Raw Data Feel’, utilized an AI program fed with various information to create lyrics, song titles, and artwork. Jonathan Higgs draws inspiration from diverse concepts, such as Julian Jaynes’s theory of bicameral mentality.

Produced by Kaines and Tom AD, ‘Mountainhead’ was primarily recorded at Eve Studios in Stockport and Ludwick House in Shropshire. The lead single, ‘Cold Reactor’, expands the band’s indie-pop sound into abstract territories with ethereal vocal samples, captivating synths, and unconventional melodies. Lyrically, the song portrays the growing sense of futility experienced by those at the bottom of the mountain, whose lives are consumed by relentless work and emotionally devoid interactions driven by binary code.

In tandem with the album’s overarching theme, the band has released an official music video for ‘Cold Reactor’, co-directed by long-time collaborators Kit Monteith and Jonathan Higgs. In the video, the band dons all-yellow worker outfits as they ascend the mountain, eventually dismantling it shard-by-shard.

Stay tuned for the release of ‘Mountainhead’ on March 1st, as Everything Everything continues to push the boundaries of their genre and captivate audiences with their thought-provoking and innovative approach to music.
