Introducing LOU, a queer artist, born and raised in a deprived suburb of Athens, Menidi. Her new work reflects the contradictions of being queer in an overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian and patriarchal country like Greece. She reinvents the characteristics of Greek “Kagouras”, breaking the narrative of heteronormative love, toxic masculinity while she explores queerness as a rite.

“Kagouras” is usually a cis man, uneducated who lives in the suburbs of Athens. He tries to show off with cheap, replica clothes, pretending that he is wearing authentic luxury brands while he is obsessed with motorcycles and cars. Although he is trying hard to appear sophisticated and give the impression that he is rich and successful, the only thing that seems he is making is an obnoxious show-off. “Kagouras” is a word interwoven with homophobia and the attempt of working-class people to imitate the lifestyle of wealthy people.
