As a performer, he slides effortlessly between masculine and feminine modes. Besides that, he is an openly queer artist.

His repertoire has become wildly eclectic, mixing genres high and low, drawing as much on Billie Holiday and Nina Simone as on contemporary dance and pop—but also opera, cabaret, lullabies, folklore, Schlager music, and chalga ( a popular Balkan hybrid that mixes oriental maqams and disco beats and is often dismissed as trashy).

His work is an extreme and colourful mixture of performance art, dance, theatre, music, drawings, and photography. Dimchev is the author of more than 30 performances. He has received numerous international awards for dance and theatre and has presented his work across Europe, South America, and North America.

Known as an irreverent and provocative performance artist, the chameleon-like queer Bulgarian choreographer, performer, and activist has recently been exploring the universe of sound. Musical research is now the core of his practice, with lyrics that weave dark poetry around the listener. His is equal parts carnal and sweet, capricious and elegant. With a stage presence oscillating between a rock star and “prima donna,” Dimchev rips out your heart and licks it before leading you onto the club dance floor. Truly a master of performance, Dimchev’s emotional voice will move even the coldest of creatures.

His voice somehow always remains in a poetic borderland, a perfect balance of melodies and rhythms. The Bulgarian-born artist turns his voice into an inexhaustible resonating body, sometimes bluesy, sometimes romantic, sometimes melancholy, sometimes techno, but always powerful.

Besides his artistic work Ivo Dimchev gives master classes at the National theatre academy in Budapest, the Royal dance conservatorium of Belgium in Antwerp, Hochschule der Künste in Bern, DanceWeb in Vienna etc. He is the founder and director of Humarts Foundation in Bulgaria and organizes every year a National competition for contemporary choreography.

In October 2009 after doing his master’s studies in performing arts at Dasarts Academy in Amsterdam, Ivo Dimchev moved to Brussels where he opened a performance space Volksroom which weekly presented international young artists.

From January 2013 Ivo Dimchev was an Artist in Residence in Kaaitheater in Brussels for 4 years. In 2014 Ivo opened his new place MOZEI in Sofia Bulgaria, an independent space focused on contemporary art and music.

His book “Stage Works 2002-2016” came out in 2016. The book presents images and dramaturgical texts from more than 30 stage works Ivo has created through the years.
His book “Lyrics and Pederatuses” came out in 2017 and presents 150 poems and short stories in the Bulgarian language.
