KALTBLUT Presents: Haru Nemuri | Badehaus

Win tickets for Japanese pop phenomenon Haru Nemuri’s show at Berlin’s Badehaus this October! There aren’t many musicians who sing in Japanese and are also celebrated in the United States and in well-informed European indie circles. Haru Nemuri has managed to do just that. She started playing the keyboard in a band when she was 17, and in 2016, when she was just in her early twenties, she made a name for herself solo in Tokyo’s lively indie and punk scene. Their debut mini-album came in October 2016 and was beautifully titled “Sayonara, Youth Phobia”. Even back then, their sound was difficult to grasp: powerful synths crash on sweet vocals, rap parts, aggressive screaming, atmospheric J-pop moments and punk attitude. While the music media often referred to Haru Nemuri as a “singer-songwriter” and “poetry rapper,” she called herself the “singing ultimate weapon.”

Their live performances were and are also considered wild events. Haruna Kimishima, her real name, who is very calm and likeable in many interviews, becomes the wild Haru Nemuri on stage, who is just singing sweet lines from the stage, two minutes later is standing on the box grunting, and then another two minutes later to surf the crowd while shouting and/or rapping. When Haru Nemuri released her debut album “harutosyura” in 2018, it was well received not only in Japan. The US magazine “Stereogum” named them one of the 40 best acts of 2018, they played their first major tours overseas and were able to gain more international fans with the successor “LOVETHEISM”. The New York Times announced Haru Nemuri as one of the “Best Acts of SXSW 2021” at the 2021 South by Southwest Festival.

Even though the lyrics remain in Haru Nemuri’s native language, this extraordinary artist invites her fans to get to know her songs better and understand the core of them. It’s not often that you can specifically recommend an act’s official website, but harunemuri.love is a really wonderful English-language website where Haru Nemuri lists the songs from her current album and also her career so far wonderful essays illuminated in a very poetic way.

In October of this year you will finally have the chance to experience Haru Nemuri live in Germany.
