Nicklas Skovgaard’s newest collection emerged gloriously at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and what can we say? We like it. Nicklas Skovgaard, a luxury womenswear brand founded in 2020, has always aimed to delight through unexpected parallels. This Copenhagen-based brand explores the dynamic relationship between textiles and narratives, marrying unconventional materials with classical forms. Nicklas, showcasing his dedication to craftsmanship, taught himself weaving after discovering a small loom, allowing him to create exceptional surfaces that now expand into jackets, hats, and capelets.

For Collection 09, Nicklas dives into a deeply personal theme—the life of his mother, Annie, at the age of 30. Drawing inspiration from personal memories and photographs circa 1994, the collection scrutinizes various ways of dressing influenced by Annie’s daily life and significant moments. From teaching aerobics to attending casual dinners and parties, the collection mirrors the contrasting styles of sporty and formal looks Nicklas observed in old imagery of his mother.
In Nicklas’s own words: “Turning 30 this year, I feel an intrinsic connection to my mother’s past at that age. The images of her are a source of fascination—seeing her switch from super sporty to super formal is a unique contrast I wanted to bring into this collection.”
The collection not only embraces the contrasting styles but also draws inspiration from the art of Trompe L’oeil paintings, specifically the works of 17th-century Dutch painter Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts. Trompe L’oeil’s technique is echoed in the garments by layering fabrics and cuts to create the illusion of multiple pieces in a single item. This approach adds a multidimensional aspect to the collection, encapsulating the brand’s signature elegance and innovation.

Nicklas Skovgaard’s Collection 09 captivated us—alluring, innovative, and deeply personal, it’s a celebration of memories sewn into the fabric.
