Plastic Ocean by Anna Dalege & Eunike Rietz

Anna Dalege is a photographer from Berlin, based in a more uncommercial, artsy style. Some day she met her now good friend Eunike Rietz on a photo production they both worked on. Dalege immediately fell in love with her flawless fashion designs combined with her high technical craftsmanship. Dalege and Rietz instantly started sketching projects they wanted to realize together. One of them is „Plastic Ocean“ – both directly talked the same creative language.

“It has always been my opinion that we as young artists have a great influence on society. That is why each of us should dedicate a part of our time and work to a social or environmental topic and positively influence the people around us and make them think about their behavior. Since we both feel a very strong responsibility towards our environment, it was clear that our first project would be an environmentally relevant and critical project – realized with our idea of aesthetics, both in fashion design as well as in photographic production.

This project „Plastic Ocean“ deals with the continuous pollution of the world’s oceans and the consequences for their inhabiting creatures. We have focused our production on making different costumes which reflect the polluting materials. However, not only the material but also the silhouette of the garment symbolize the pain and the oppressive feelings of the victims. The whole project was realized in a photo production with a model at the center – as a kind of identification figure for the viewer, so to speak. The model was surrounded by an environment evoking the merciless destruction of marine habitats, a destruction brought upon the inhabitants of the seas without their fault. An irreparable consequence caused by the insatiable consumerism of mankind.

With this artistic work on marine pollution, the viewer should be emotionally involved and question his or her behavior. It is not about presenting a behavioral solution, but rather about triggering the necessary motivation to create an awareness which brings about long-term change.”
