Hamburg based multi-instrumentalist / singer-songwriter KUOKO returns with a brand new track ‘FIREWORK’, lifted from her upcoming album due for release later this year through cult German label Kabul Fire Records. Following on from her recent single ‘All I Want’, ‘FIREWORK’ continues KUOKO’s musical evolution, having written and produced all the songs herself, ‘FIREWORK’ draws on a myriad of influences from pop, indie, electronica and soul, both slow burning and intimate, it is a moving display of emotional vulnerability.
Firework is a reflection of the past few years, which have been marked by great uncertainty, revealing old and new abysses in society. The track comes from a place of feeling locked inside, whether at home or within one’s own body, and raises the question of how to grow and find happiness in such circumstances. The lyric ‘I wanna feel a firework of happiness, but all I get is just a flicker of light’. This is about finding strength through creating and keeping the fire alive for the things you love to do without burning out.
KUOKO’s raw and honest lyrics reflect the imaginary but relatable dialogue between two people. Finding the strength to give a truthful answer to that question and feeling empowered is what determines the flower motive of the accompanying visualiser. KUOKO employs floral imagery in her work, this time the fragile looking flowers, looking almost like they’re made of glass, are growing from a dark place, fighting their way through rocks, seeking the light.
For a few years now KUOKO has proven herself a skilful, self-producing composer / songwriter and a master of the synth-pop sonic world. With a crystal clear voice KUOKO taps into melancholic, dreamlike spheres (Floating), whether in indie-pop fashion (Hiding In The Dark) or even in danceable, electronic dresses (Perfect Girl).
By the time her self-titled debut album was released in September 2021 via Kabul Fire Records, KUOKO established herself as a unique allrounder that puts as much effort into creating the visual world around her sound, as in playing elusive live shows. After being invited to prominent showcase festivals like the Great Escape (UK) or Popkultur Festival (GER), she played several support shows with electro-pop duo ÄTNA in Switzerland. As cover artist of Spotify’s EQUAL GSA playlist (Oct 2021) the Hamburg based artist even reached the New York Times Square’s Billboards, next to other female artists, who are passing boarders internationally.
