“I am lost for words.” “Variation” hinges upon the humility inherent in these lines. A humility mirrored in the rhythmic lightness of touch. In the softly arching duration of 90’s rompler samples of human voices. A humility arrived at in the face of the equitable intelligence sensed in our world. “Variation in the natural world” – the modern thought of the natural world, exclusive of nothing and of no place.

The song, which arrives with a video directed by Kuplowsky and edited by Colin Medley, features Toronto multi-instrumentalist, idolized songwriter, and sought-after collaborator, Thom Gill on vocals.

The video for “Variation” imagines the song as a surrealist field recording and interspecies collaboration: a microphone grazes the curve of a leaf; radio signals bridge animal worlds; an enigmatic frog responds. Inspired by the segment “The Volume” in the anthology film Funky Forest: The First Contact by Shunichiro Miki, Hajime Ishimine, and Katsuhito Ishii.
