Kaleo Sansaa drops her new single ‘Waste of Sin’ alongside a music video and the announcement of her second album CHII, due to be released at the end of September. In this album, Kaleo Sansaa translates the impressive life of her grandmother into an artistically interpreted story: a demigoddess on her way to inner peace. The single marks the beginning of this narrative: The ‘Waste of Sin’. But Kaleo Sansaa turns this biblical motif around and wants to celebrate alleged sins such as pleasure, lust and enjoyment, as well as leave behind feelings of shame and guilt.

In this way, the song criticizes the stigmatization of pleasure in a patriarchal society, where FLINTA* persons in particular experience how their self-determination is restricted. But Kaleo Sansaa is also focused on the survivor’s guilt that many BIPOC-FLINTA* feel because generations before them have sacrificed and struggled so much. Not only does she deliver an empowering song in terms of content, but also musically: confidently performed rap passages and Kaleo’s adept vocal delivery meet a unique soundscape between experimental hip-hop and Afropop. Markus Spitta (offshoot*berlin) is responsible for the music video of ‘Waste of Sin’. In the video, Kaleo Sansaa and her dancers are staged in an artistic-experimental setting, matching the sound. Thus the musician herself resembles the demigoddess of her narrative.

Kaleo Sansaa’s music nourishes itself with warmth and light as well as cold darkness. The Berlin-based artist creates a unique sound with experimental hip-hop and Afropop, which sometimes sounds quite familiar and archaic, and then again like a genre for which a name has yet to be found. Influenced by her grandmother’s gift, Kaleo Sansaa took her first musical steps as a child. Over the years, she continued to improve her vocal talent and creative concept until she released her debut album Solarbased Kwing in 2021.

With this, Sansaa paves her new artistic path and not only wins numerous new listeners but also wanders through renowned German media and gives interviews to, among others, Musikexpress, Rosa Mag, WDR Cosmo, WDR 3 and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. In addition, Kaleo Sansaa has already been nominated for a number of awards across Europe: in 2018 she won the award for Best Music Video at the Berlin Short Film Festival and received a nomination for the POP NRW Award in 2019. Besides her own big live shows at for example Dockville Festival, Pop-Kultur Berlin or Ruhrtriennale, she also accompanies artists like Noga Erez, Alli Neumann and Nneka on tour.

Kaleo Sansaa has big steps planned for this year as well: In September, her second album CHII will be released, with which she will subsequently go on her first headline tour through London, Berlin, Cologne, Amsterdam and Paris in winter 2023.
