Press Play: Okay Kaya – Oh My God – That’s So Me

Okay Kaya’s fourth studio album, Oh My God – That’s So Me, marks a significant milestone in her career as an independent artist. Entirely written, recorded, and produced by Kaya in the serene landscapes outside Oslo, Norway, this album encapsulates her raw talent and artistic vision.

The album contains the previously celebrated singles “Check Your Face,” “Undulation Days,” and “The Groke,” each accompanied by an ethereal music video directed by Julia Patey. Kaya’s unique ability to proclaim her desires and emotions without interruption is palpable throughout the album. She boldly embraces statements and experiences, guided by the notion that one must imagine the rock as happy and committing herself fully to pay attention to life’s details.

Since her last album, SAP, and indeed in the six years since Both, Okay Kaya’s artistic journey has been transformative, bringing her closer to her authentic self. The notion of “faking it till she feels okay” is now obsolete for her, as illustrated in the empowering track “The Wannabe,” where she sings, “I’ll take the sensations, just let me back into my body again.”

The concluding track, “The Art of Poetry,” exemplifies a profound revelation, with Kaya finding soothing recognition in her previous work, resulting in the refrain, “Oh My God — That’s So Me.” Her songwriting remains a remarkable blend of beauty and blunt day-to-day reality, showcasing a once-in-a-generation talent.

Oh My God – That’s So Me expands on the introspective and self-realized themes of 2022’s SAP. Kaya’s seclusion on a new island home, accessible only by boat, provided an ideal creative environment with unique constraints. These limitations shaped the album, fostering an introspective and isolated creative process, abstracting concepts of multi-platform existence, and navigating the make-believe in art.

This album stands as a testament to Okay Kaya’s evolving artistry, her enduring ability to connect deeply with listeners through her evocative and candid songwriting.
