TYSON makes her debut on LUCKYME with the eagerly awaited EP, CHAOS. This project includes singles ‘Jumpstart’ and ‘Grunge’, featuring Wu-Lu. Critics from Giles Peterson to Vogue.com are praising it, calling it “an impressively self-assured journey across genres, unified by TYSON’s honest lyrics and smooth voice.” The 10 tracks of CHAOS showcase TYSON’s strong creative partnership with co-writer and producer Oscar Scheller. Their songwriting blends dusky R&B with elements of breakbeats, street soul, and trip-hop, while also exploring influences from icy ’80s synthpop to spacious ’00s R&B.
The lead single ‘Jumpstart’ brings back the soulful essence of 2-step, setting the tone for a record that explores themes of growing up and self-acceptance. The track ‘Alien Romance’ features uptempo machine-funk, while the focus track ‘300kHz (Low Frequency)’ addresses “low frequency” behaviour over moody trip-hop sounds. ‘Carousel’ delves into mental health and escapism, similar to themes from her earlier work.
Now navigating new motherhood, CHAOS reflects TYSON’s journey of self-discovery. Notably, her great aunt Barbara introduces her in the intro, while the outro includes a sampled ultrasound heartbeat, symbolizing new life. This collection marks a pivotal moment for TYSON, as she leaves behind the confusion of her late 20s.
Fans are invited to contribute clips for her next video for ‘300kHz (Low Frequency)’ here.
Newly signed to LUCKYME, CHAOS follows a series of successful solo releases through TYSON’s co-founded label, Ladies Music Pub Records, including last year’s Sunsetters/Daybreakers and her Pisces Problems EP. TYSON has garnered acclaim from outlets like The Guardian, and her music is supported by prominent figures such as Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs.
Continuing her collaborative spirit, TYSON recently appeared on Karen Nyame KG’s single “Hold Of Me” and was featured in Neneh Cherry’s latest album, The Versions. Her organization, Ladies Music Pub, has been connecting women, non-binary, and trans individuals in the music industry since 2015.
