Based out of Athens and London, the avant-pop sensation VASSIŁINA debuts her second album, Femmeland, via the Greek indie icon, Inner Ear Records. This anthology showcases a powerful narrative of self-discovery, reflecting on mental health, embracing life with a chronic illness, coping with loss, and harnessing the essence of Greek feminine archetypes.
The upcoming release of Femmeland on April 12th signifies a bold step for VASSIŁINA following her inaugural album, Fragments, in 2021. The new album traverses the terrains of pop and electronic genres, charting a course through personal acceptance and the cathartic process of finding authenticity.
Comprising 13 tracks of dark, electronic pop, Femmeland reveals the inner journey of VASSIŁINA as she bids farewell to her former existence in London and steps into the fullness of her identity. The album crafts a vivid emotional narrative that probes into mental health, chronic illness, loss, and the scarring impact of trauma, all while celebrating the profound healing found in the solidarity of others and the acceptance of one’s multifaceted voices.
Femmeland’s artistic direction is deeply rooted in the mythical lore of Circe, the enchantress daughter of Helios, the sun god, and the ocean nymph Perse. The lead single and music video “Crooked,” directed by Giorgos Athanasiou, dramatizes Circe’s defiance of patriarchal constraints and her renunciation of divine immortality—a symbolic representation of VASSIŁINA’s own path to self-healing.
The visual and aesthetic storyline of the album was conceptualized by VASSIŁINA with Vinyl Face. Supplementary to the soundscape are Erifili Doukeli’s 3D graphic design, Contino’s graphic artistry, and the evocative photography of Costas Simos.
As a distinguished figure in the Athens avant-pop movement, VASSIŁINA persists in crafting auditory narratives that meld pop harmonies with a darker electronic palette.
