Identity as a performance is a central theme of his work. He constructs highly staged and dreamlike environments that allow marginalised people to reclaim and reimagine the facets of their identity that are most stigmatised. By working on eye level with his subjects and prioritising their desires: who they wish to be and how they wish others to see them, Josh’s portraits act as a mechanism of subversion and empowerment.
As a queer child growing up in a working-class family in the south of Germany, Josh began imagining alternative worlds and social structures that recognise the beauty of those unseen. Today, the main motives for his work are representation and inclusion. Josh’s images playfully combine surrealism with a depth of character to give space and power to the aspects of our identities that make us most vulnerable.
