As a tribute, Sammy Lou, a stylist and designer, revisited her mother Petri Raijmakers’ clothing collection. The collection was Petri’s graduation project from the 1980s at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and Sammy Lou featured it in both a photographic series and the short film RUBBER, photographed and directed by Remy Cats.
SL: “My mother was a loud punk back then; she needed to create. She sparked my love for secondhand material, since she found inspiration in waste and discarded things. I’m channelling her punk look and attitude of the 80s. She taught me how to upcycle garments, not to be judgmental towards others, and how freeing and valuable it is to be true to your identity.”
Petri Raijmakers’ collection is entirely crafted from scraps of car tyres, transformed into sculptural garments that contour and challenge the human form. Material that once hit the road is now worn on the body.
