Navigating ModaLisboa this season has been an incredible rush of discovery, and none of it would have been possible without our generous hosts at APICCAPS Portugal, whose ongoing commitment to spotlighting daring visionaries continues to bring us right to the front row of Lisbon’s most vital creative moments. Among the lineup at the Workstation Design platform, Çal Pfungst delivered what quickly became one of my absolute personal highlights of the entire week.
Presenting the SS27 collection, titled ALOOF, the designer dives deep into what they define as carewear—garments deliberately conceived to foster an emotional and sensory dialogue with the wearer. Bypassing purely decorative fashion, Pfungst’s universe builds an intimate lore around clothes as tactile, responsive companions that activate memory and physical presence:

“SS27 — ALOOF.
Maybe it’s the distance.
By a thread. It pulls away from the skin and returns.
I don’t remember letting go.
The world goes by, or maybe time, and I’m hanging by a thread.
ALOOF is chronokinesis, windstorm, illusion.
Like trying to hold the wind in your hands.
Like recognising someone by the way they disappear.”
On the runway, this poetic tension translated into fluid architecture and fragile, suspended layers. Garments seem to float between staying anchored and slipping away, exploring an immanent conversation between textile and skin. The collection treats tailoring not as a rigid cage, but as an extension of personal space, a fluid, protective skin designed to hold emotion without smothering it.

The nuanced movement, textures, and atmospheric restraint of the presentation were documented with striking clarity by photographer Alexandre Azevedo, whose lens brought out the quiet power of Pfungst’s subtle silhouette play.
