KALTBLUT talked with JJ Weihl of Berlin’s groovy and ever-evolving Fenster ahead of the premiere of their wildly adventurous single “HAHA Lol”. This single is the second release from their newest album, The Room, out September 14th via Altin Village & Mine.
KALTBLUT talked with JJ Weihl of Berlin’s groovy and ever-evolving Fenster ahead of the premiere of their wildly adventurous single “HAHA Lol”. This single is the second release from their newest album, The Room, out September 14th via Altin Village & Mine.
JJ Weihl shares, “The Room is the first album that the four of us composed, arranged and recorded together so – I guess you could say the musical shift is also a personal one. We put a lot of time and energy into cultivating a space in which we could really create music together, and that’s maybe the biggest shift of all. While making this record, we all lived together, first in Rotterdam and then in the countryside of Tuscany. The music itself captures this time we shared – trying to transcend ego and channel music. I think what came out is something none of us could have created as individuals. Tracking the songs live was also a new way of working for us – trying to capture the organic way we play together.”
“HAHA Lol” is playfully climactic and one of the more deconstructed songs on the album. There are moments of explosive rock, electric piano, disarming tender harmonies and percussion comprised of splashing water. The four musicians layer sound over sound, effortlessly putting you as the listener in a space right there with them. JJ revealed that they just let this take them somewhere unexpected.
“The way we made ‘HAHA Lol’ is a good example of this process we developed while making the album. It started with a bass riff and then turned into something completely different – recording sounds of water splashing, the radio, things like that. The vocal line is really dreamy. Johnny and Lucas are singing together and their voices kind of melt into one another. There are several points on the album where you can’t exactly tell who is singing. I think we really tried to play with our own expectations of what is possible and have fun. And laugh at ourselves. Haha. Lol.”
