Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Derek Simpson is creating music that feels like it’s from another dimension. Known for his distinctive soundscapes, layered with spacey guitar chords and otherworldly synth lines, Derek’s music delves deep into introspective wordplay, often exploring the power of maintaining a positive outlook amidst confusion and adversity.
Derek’s talent and unique creative vision have earned him recognition from numerous esteemed publications. His music has also made its way into popular culture, with tracks featured in Comedy Central’s hit series Workaholics and the feature film The Wheel, starring Amber Midhunter.
Following the release of his previous album Somehow, Derek is now unveiling another collection of beautiful, dreamlike songs. Released via Trailing Twelve Records, Somehow (Abstracts) marks a return to his roots, filled with soft, dynamic sounds. The flow between tracks is seamless, taking us on a journey into the expansive mind of the artist. His notes are eerie and ethereal—surreal would also be a fitting adjective to describe his art.
Somehow (Abstracts) lives up to its name, opening with a song that feels almost metaphysical. Titled 222 (Abstract), the synths are steady, creating a consistent rhythm that gradually evolves as more layers are introduced—crafting an otherworldly atmosphere, like a lullaby from the far reaches of space. copilot (Abstract), on the other hand, strikes a different chord. A steady acoustic guitar drives the melody, contrasting with the earlier tracks. Yet, the dreamlike rhythm eventually returns. Midway through, the sounds meld into a strange, unified amalgamation before gently unraveling and fading into silence.
Honorable mentions go to the peculiarly playful boytoy (Abstract), with its almost alien melody, and Bonez & All (Abstract), a perfect closing chapter to this surreal journey we’ve embarked on with Derek.
“If Somehow explores memory and it’s billowing out within the limitation of traditionally pop song structures, then the Abstracts journey one step further into the dreamlike inner space and surrender to its abstraction.” — Derek Simpson
Somehow (Abstracts) underscores the complex interplay of emotions—happiness, sadness, grief, and love—showing that these feelings don’t exist as opposites but as deeply intertwined aspects of the human experience. If you’re a fan of Akira Yamaoka, especially his work on Silent Hill 4: The Room, then Derek Simpson’s Somehow (Abstracts) will be right up your alley.

If you’re in Los Angeles, don’t miss Derek Simpson live at Permanent Records Roadhouse on April 10th—his first show in over a year. He’ll be joined by Grace Kay and Smooth Jas for a stacked night celebrating the vinyl release of Somehow.
