Sound Of The Week: Alex Wilcox

BNR Trax presents a bold collaboration between American Berlin-based artist Alex Wilcox and Toronto’s dynamic Chippy Nonstop. Their collaboration on the newest EP, ‘I Did That,’ crackles with creative energy, making it a perfect fit for the Boys Noize sub-label.

Alex and Chippy’s partnership began serendipitously in Paris, where their instant camaraderie led them straight to the studio. With Alex crafting the beats and Chippy on the mic, their synergy is electric. Chippy’s uninhibited style challenged Alex to expand his musical and lyrical horizons.

The EP’s music video, a collaboration between Alex and Doberman, delivers visually stunning content that perfectly encapsulates the music’s essence. Through long shots, progressive build-ups, and a spirit of exploration, the video is a visual feast.

Alex’s transition from the US rock scene to Berlin’s techno haven is evident in his music. After relocating to Detroit, his debut album quickly garnered attention from industry heavyweights like Anetha, who discovered his explosive track “Sleep Paralysis.” This led to a release on her Mama Told Ya imprint. Under the mentorship of UR legend Mike Banks, Alex refined his production skills, resulting in releases on Ellen Alien’s UFO and Nina Kraviz’s Trip, and earning him gigs worldwide. His unique sound, a fusion of punk rock energy and techno mentality, has solidified his status in the electronic music scene.

The four-track EP on Boys Noize sub-label BNR TRAX, featuring Chippy Nonstop’s vocals, marks a significant moment in Alex’s career. As he continues to incorporate live vocals into his DJ sets, his performances transform into chaotic whirlwinds, characterized by hard cuts, varied BPMs, theatrical elements, and a distinct punk rock spirit.
