Swedish electronic artist Karin Park is making waves with her upcoming EP, EVO, set to drop on May 8 via Size Records. This marks the first instalment of a trilogy, EVO-LUT-ION-(EN), which promises to be a captivating exploration of transformation, freedom, and artistic growth. To introduce this exciting project, Park has unveiled the first single and official video for the hauntingly beautiful track, “Sing Your Sorrow.”
“Sing Your Sorrow” is an atmospheric electronic pop piece that delves into deep emotional territory. Karin describes the track as a heartfelt expression of a desire to shoulder the burdens of others, specifically written for her daughter, Lydia. The accompanying video, directed by Simon Silverdahl, captures the essence of Karin’s art through its romanticised visuals: “There’s a rare magic in working with a true artist where the ideas just flow,” Simon shares. “We took our local roots and turned them into a romanticised piece. It was effortless, inspiring, and pure joy.”
Inspired by the mystical works of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint, EVO showcases a new creative chapter for Park. With roots in a musical upbringing surrounded by melancholic Swedish hymns, her songwriting reflects an emotional depth that resonates in every note. Karin notes, “Those sad Swedish hymns became the foundation of how I write music.” Her transition from guitar-based singer-songwriter to electronic innovator has resulted in a unique fusion of synth-driven pop, experimental electronica, and darker industrial influences.
As she embraces a darker gothic electronic palette with this collection of EPs, Karin steps away from previous collaborations that anchored her within specific dance scenes. With EVO, she embarks on a solo journey that diverges from her work with the noise rock band Årabrot, which she fronts alongside her husband. Park connects her artistic evolution to Hilma af Klint’s concept of EVO-LUT-ION-EN, finding inspiration in their shared experiences of existing in a complex society. “Hilma was an occultist in a Christian society just like me. She painted from a higher state, and the depth in her work really appeals to me,” Karin states.
Recorded with French producer Anthony Belguise, EVO showcases a fluid songwriting process, with songs evolving dramatically from day to day. “It was like a love story, creatively,” she reflects. “Sometimes a song would change completely overnight. We had a flow through the whole process that I have never experienced before.” Her sound continues to mature, merging analogue textures with house, techno, synthwave, and UK garage elements, resulting in what she describes as “deep, dark, playful Swedish electronic pop that could be the soundtrack to a Nicolas Winding Refn film.”
Through EVO, Karin Park invites her listeners to embark on their own journeys of rediscovery. “I want people to remember who they really are. We get lost in life, but we are also meant to find ourselves again,” she shares.
