Sound of the Week: Kovacs

It started with the most dramatic of all entrances: “My Love”. Released in June of last year, the voice alone pulled you into a dark, hypnotic state – and that was without the trippy, gothic visuals soon to follow! Straight from the heart of Eindhoven, Sharon Kovacs has the soulful voice of someone who has lived a life. Seen the things someone shouldn’t see. Or maybe she’s just a really good singer. Either way, the eccentric 24 year old “wolf lady” caught up with KALTBLUT about her recent adventures and debut album Shades of Black, released this Friday!

KALTBLUT: What have you been up to recently?

Kovacs: I’ve just finished the album and been doing a lot of promotion, some shows here and there.

KALTBLUT: I saw you won an Edison award – congratulations! Were you surprised?

Kovacs: Yes very much! On the day of the awards we had a German TV show and we couldn’t be there. After the show [producer] Oscar came to us and told me we’d won an Edison. It was a very special moment.

KALTBLUT: What do you get up to while in Berlin? Do you have any favourite places to hang out at?

Kovacs: I have a lot of favourite places, one of them is the Monster Ronson’s Ichiban Karaoke bar and also the Soho House is very nice.

KALTBLUT: Do you ever get homesick when you’re travelling so much?

Kovacs: No I don’t, I am always happy when I am home but I also look forward to leave again.

KALTBLUT: You were once named “the new Amy Winehouse”, how do you feel about that?

Kovacs: Amy was a wonderful and amazing singer so it’s a big compliment, only I hope that in the future they will give me my own box.

KALTBLUT: Your songs come across quite jazzy, was this the style that influenced you when you were growing up?

Kovacs: Well no, it was only later I discovered jazz and still I have to say I am very unaware of what is out there. I also like to listen to all kinds of music like soul, funk, blues, rock etc..

KALTBLUT: What was school like for you? Did music play a big part?

Kovacs: I was never the perfect student, I also was a bit rebellious. Music always played a big part but only became serious when I started my study in the Rock City Institute in Eindhoven

KALTBLUT: Did you shave your head as a rebellious act or was it something you just felt like doing?
Kovacs: I think both.

KALTBLUT: Your documentary Wolflady, what is it all about?

Kovacs: It’s about the beginning of the recording process up until finishing the album. We started filming right at the beginning of everything. You see us going to Cuba, New York and also the show of my final school performance.

KALTBLUT: Your debut album is out soon, what can we expect from it?

Kovacs: It’ s our journey of the last 3 years, all the songs are written in different periods. We used a lot of elements from different genres and it has a dark and melancholic feel overall.

KALTBLUT: How many “Shades of Black” do you think there are?

Kovacs: Now there are 12!

KALTBLUT: What has been a big turning point in your life so far?

Kovacs: When I really decided to make my own music.

KALTBLUT: What is next for Kovacs?

Kovacs: Hopefully a lot of shows in a lot of different countries and starting to write new songs for our second album.

Shades Of Black is out on Friday 24th April – get it here!
