Sound of the Week: Moyka – Moon

Norwegian electropop artist Moyka has just returned with her deeply emotional new single, “Moon,” out today, July 10th, via her own label, MOYKA (ADA Nordics/Warner Music Norway). It is a striking visual and sonic offering that beautifully secures its place as our Sound of the Week here at KALTBLUT.

Following the recent release of “Icarus,” “Moon” explores the profound feeling of returning from somewhere so transformative that you never see the world the same way again. Using the moon as both a literal and emotional metaphor, the track captures a snapshot of a dark moment, reaching for light in the midst of uncertainty. At its core, “Moon” is about longing to feel okay again, holding onto hope while wrestling with an inner emptiness and the temptation of escapism. Existing in the fragile space between despair and hope, the song perfectly showcases Moyka’s gift for pairing vulnerable lyricism with immersive, forward-thinking electronic production.

The release marks a significant step in Moyka’s artistic evolution. Having once been highly protective of her creative process, she has gradually let go of earlier insecurities, growing increasingly willing to push beyond her comfort zone without worrying about outside perceptions. Co-written and produced alongside Sebastian Furrer (Avicii, Icona Pop, Yaeger, Anna of the North), “Moon” embraces an expansive electronic sound that draws similarities from boundary-pushing artists like A. G. Cook, Charli XCX, and SOPHIE.

“Sebastian and I have written a lot together, both in Stockholm and Bergen, and it always feels like a dream making art with him,” Moyka explains. “He has this magical energy that fills the whole room, and with Mathilde Nygaard joining the session for ‘Moon’, it felt like an adventure seeing where we could take the song together.”

Moyka then added the finishing touches to the track with long-time collaborator Eirik Hella, whom she met while studying music production in Bergen. The pair have developed a creative shorthand that flows naturally, helping take the track to its final, elevated state.

Widely regarded as one of Norway’s most distinctive voices in contemporary electropop, Moyka continues to build an acclaimed catalogue that blends ethereal electronics with emotionally resonant songwriting. For listeners drawn to the sonic worlds of PinkPantheress, Oklou, and Caroline Polachek, “Moon” offers another compelling glimpse into an artist completely in control of her evolving vision.
